Day 21 - Maine

We awoke to the beautiful landscape of Maine, and headed out for some beach time. This was Seans first experience with the Atlantic. It was a short one. We had a debate on whether the Atlantic was colder than the glacial water we swam in at yosemite. We both agreed that it was colder than the pacific in the winter.

After sun bathing, we explored bar harbor in search of the perfect lobster & lobster rolls:

This was my first time eating a whole one, Sean had to teach me how. Here I am freaked out:

Ooh, and the wild blueberry pie - was amazing!!

We admired everyone setting out on sail boats and big boat tours, when I decided that we too needed to explore the harbor and it's many islands.

This is where I found Winston. I could tell from the phone conversation that he was a one man operation, and by the way he talked that our tour on his vessel would certainly be exclusive & unique.

We quickly learned that he's a jack of all trades type - er, a Renaissance man. Winston can fly an f-16 fighter jet - even tho he modestly admitted he didn't have his pilots license. Upon approaching the steep granite cliffs of the porcupine islands, tho he wasn't a geologist, he could name the type of formation of the rocks, because he was a rock climber.

Pointing out the lighthouse 4 miles away, he explained that bald eagles can see 9x that distance. He says that he has a trained eye and can spot one 2 miles away (while pointing one out 1/2 a mile away). I think he in some nest watching program. We learned that while Winston was hitchhiking across the country in the 70s, he ended up in Maine, because he was a photographer working for the government, and his equipment got stolen.

Here we are in bar harbor on winstons boat. I didn't get a photo of him, but just imagine The guy from Ernest Hemingway's "Old man and the sea."

When we were in yellowstone, we met Carl & Claire, who were on their way back home from Alaska. When they found out we were going to Maine, they asked us to stop by and spend some time on their lake. They promised lots of lobster and scallops...

And boy did they deliver!! Whoa!

This is two dozen live lobsters ready to boil

Two dozen for 4 people.

Let's get a closer look at all that scrumptious food!

Sean, you don't eat the shell!
I had 3 more that evening and Sean got 6 down.

That's about all we could handle for one day. Whew!

  2. Hi Sean and April,

I have been following your blog and love it. It sounds like you are having a blast. I love the idea of the cell phone master piece photo album. I bet you could make a cool mill presenting that idea to a cell phone company. I dont know who makes I-Phone...so you have to figure that one out.

I am very jealous of the Lobster and scallop meal..oh and the blueberry pie...Mmmmmmm..I must have some. OH...April, you look stunning in your lobster bib...Rock on girl!!!!

I am glad to see that you are having so much fun. I am envious but so glad that you are having such a great life adventure.

Can't wait to see all the photos in person and read the rest of the blogs. xoxoxoox Kathy E.
