Day 9 - South Dakota

Sure 400 miles of Ill maintained mountain highway might seem tedious to some... But since were ninjas, we can do it in the dark.

Redbull, exploding mountains and giant deer = incentive to stay focused.

We arrived in deadwood sd around 630am where we took a short nap in the parking lot of a super 8.

Later, a little shopping:

A nice hat indeed, but the matching underwear is divine.

Even though everything we liked in deadwood was too expensive, we couldn't leave empty handed:

The resemblance is uncanny.

In the town of Custer they have parades every Saturday. Today is Saturday and so we witnessed a parade. Behold:

I guess residents of Custer are a little slow to adopt the horseless carriage.

At lunch time April did her best to blend in with the locals.

We spotted some caves on the map, so we decided to have a looksie under sd.

Here's me doing some more spelunking in wind cave national park. These caves are incredible. Read up on them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_Cave_National_Park

Next stop wall drug!

This place is about 4 acres worth of drug store, general store, cafe, resteraunt, ice cream shop, camping supplies, souveniers, toy store, rock shop, art galleries, museum, chapels, playgrounds, and so on.
However it would probably be nothing without it's advertising - there were literally hundred of signs spanning 40 miles of highway.

Today was especially enriching because we finally came to terms with our inner beast. Here we are sporting our spirit animals:

I can't speak for April but somthing about that shirt made me feel - I don't know - transformed.

Before bedtime, a ruthless standoff with a yellow 1986 industrial strength washing machine. Stuck on the spin cycle for almost two hours, it did not care whether the lid was open or closed, it wanted to spin. Long story short, we unplugged it.

Our camp outside of badlands sd

Night!

  1. Your blogs have not only entertained me immensely whilst I sit in my high rise all day long overlooking the beautiful Santa Ana skyline and congested 5fwy, but they have also led me to two important conclusions:
1.A cross country road trip may possibly not be as horrific an idea as I previously thought
2.Perhaps it is time to upgrade my Samsung flip phone (circa 1997) for an iPhone. I thought I could live without the e-mail, the tetras, the whoopee cushion application, but I think the photo feature is pretty awesome. Great pics guys!

  2. awww..you guys needed your moms along. This cross country trip looks much too dangerous. Both Kathy and I would have been such a huge help too.

  3. Yes, but I would have probably opted for the drive-by-day and sleep-at-night method of travel..I don't think they would go for that! :)
