Day 5 - Oregon coast

It's going to take us an entire day to get to Portland, but after a good night sleep in a real bed and an amazing breakfast we are in good shape. Thanks again Linda for your hospitality!

Bear, you are a noble pooch. See you again soon.

Nathan, congrats on discovering the joys of walking, now try and go easy on your parents.

Back to The Buick.

I decided to take the helm because april preoccupied herself with a newly accuired stack of maps and tour guides courtesy of Linda.

Anybody who has gone through the coast of Oregon knows it's a drive full of strange beauty. As a native Californian, it reminded me of big sur, on steroids, with logging trucks.

We listened to sublime, got hungry and ate at a crab shack.

April didn't quite eat her fil so she picked up a brick of peanutbutter fudge and nursed it Throughout the day.

We learned a couple new legalities about being a motorist in Oregon. Pumping your own gas in Oregon is illegal, I was told while pumping
My own gas in Medford. Later, April unmasked the intolerant side of at least 2 residence in "The friendliest city" Newport. Their screaming obsenities and honking horns hinted that U-turns were not permitted at traffic lights unless a sign posted otherwise. Thanks Newport!

Oregon dunes state park proved a good intermission.

To strech our legs...

See the marine life

And die of exposure...

A few hundred feet away some nice people saw our goofing off as a good photo op and took these great pictures and emailed them to us.

Thanks again Dick and Evelyn!

The cell phone signal has been poor for the most part during this drive which is why we found this geographic feature misleading.

The dissapearing marine layer and change of landscape corresponded with our push inland toward Portland. By that point were a bit dissapointed about the lack of elk sightings despite all the warnings along the highway. But just when we lost all hope, we caught our first glimps at a real elk, and managed a picture no less;

He was delicious.

We got salmon jerky too..

We bought it from this guy.

The sun set around 930 just before we arrived in the city, where we concluded the day with whiskey and spaetzel at the victory bar in se Portland.
